About Us

Summary
Arts For Life’s Fellowship Program is designed for emerging & professional artists seeking ways to utilize their skills with youth in their communities. In the program, Arts For Life staff trains & supervises the Fellows in teaching the arts to young patients in hospital settings for 6-24 hours each week. Fellows work with Arts For Life for a minimum of 1 year.

2007-2008 Artist Fellow, Katherin McGinn describes the program saying:

“It is difficult and usually a long path to bring what you love, your artwork and making a living together into something that is rewarding and makes an impact. The Fellowship Program provides an opportunity for artists to help fill a real need in the community by using their skills and sharing their knowledge. I am proud and honored to be in this position and to serve and teach kids by sharing my specific art form.”

The Artists Fellows strengthen Arts for Life's short and long-term programming by adding new artistic media to our work. The Program reaches hundreds of young patients and helps them to stay active, learn, and create. Since each of the Fellows bring new and distinct skills to Arts for Life, they are an important mechanism for "continuous improvement" for the organization.

Funding
Arts For Life began the Fellowship Program in Asheville and Winston-Salem in 2006-2007 with grants from The Janirve Foundation, The NC Arts Council, Ronald McDonald Charities of NC, The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, and The Winston-Salem Foundation.

Arts For Life depends on donations and sponsorships from individuals and businesses to continue the Fellowship Program. Please consider helping hundreds of young patients and your arts community by sponsoring a 2010-11 AFL Artist Fellowship.

For Artists:
Arts For Life accepts applications for its Fellowship Program throughout the year. Successful artist fellows create beginning, intermediate, and advanced projects that peak the interest of children of all ages.  We prefer that the Fellows have experience working with children. Fellows must be residents of North Carolina.

We currently do not have any openings for Artist Fellows in any of our chapters.

The Dickson Art Fellowship Fund
In 2007, Asheville Savings Bank established the Dickson Art Fellowship Fundto help continue one annual Artist Fellowship in WNC. The bank made this generous contribution to Arts For Life in honor of John Dickson and his retirement as their President and CEO.

The Dickson Art Fellowship Fund is held at the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. To contribute to the fund, send a check made out the Dickson Art Fellowship Fund and send it to:
